OCC Chief Demands Equal Treatment for Crypto Firms in Bank Charter Process
Jonathan Gould, head of the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), dismissed banking industry complaints about crypto firms seeking national trust bank charters during a Washington policy summit. "Digital asset companies must be evaluated identically to traditional institutions," he stated, warning that discriminatory treatment would undermine financial innovation.
The OCC has received 14 charter applications this year, including from crypto custodians. Gould emphasized that digital asset custody merely extends electronic safekeeping services dating back decades. "There's no logical basis for differential scrutiny," he added, rejecting claims that the OCC lacks capacity to supervise crypto banking activities.
